CLAA Grade 10 Certificate

Certificate

The Grade 10 Certificate is conferred upon students who complete the tenth-grade course of studies in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy — the second year of the Academy's classical secondary curriculum, and the second of the four annual certificates that culminate in the Academy's accredited High School Diploma.

In the tenth grade, the student advances from the foundations laid in his first year: his study of Latin and Greek moves from grammar toward the reading of real texts, as the languages begin to yield their treasures; the art of Reasoning is taken up in earnest, training the mind to define, divide, and judge arguments soundly; classical Geometry joins Arithmetic among the mathematical arts, raising the mind through the study of magnitude as the ancients intended; and the reading of classic texts deepens, with Sacred Scripture and Catholic doctrine continuing to order all studies to their true end. Modern requirements in mathematics, sciences, and social studies are fulfilled within this course of studies — as servants of a classical education, not substitutes for one.

Every requirement of the certificate is published, and progress is measured by demonstrated mastery: the student advances by proving that he knows each lesson, not by the passage of a school year. Families may follow their student's progress requirement by requirement, and when the full standard is met, the certificate is conferred by the Headmaster's own hand and permanently recorded in the student's academic record — the second milestone marked, halfway now to the diploma.
